Database Services Preview Winter 08

Personal tagging

User can add their own tags to individual records. Tags can be used for searching records. A tag can be applied to records of more than one object type, enhancing the ability to group records together across objects. All tags are personal – they can be used by the tagger, but are not visible to others. Tags can be managed, which allows correction of tag text or merging of similar tags.

Use case

A user could tag all leads and opportunities which were interested in a particular product enhancement, making it easy to locate and contact them when the enhancement is delivered.

Availability

Encrypted custom fields

Custom fields can be designated as encrypted. Encrypted custom fields are stored as encrypted in the Force.com database, are shown with encryption masks, and are only shown unmasked to users with the permission to see the values unmasked.

Use case

Data must sometimes be encrypted to comply with regulatory requirements. A financial institution could store account information about clients as encrypted data, but still show the data to the client’s Financial Advisor.
